I may update this from time to time by adding descriptions of the notation-less links, especially if there's an interesting quote to be had.

The picture that emerges from Time, however, is definitely tilted toward his civil rights abuses. There is surprisingly little focus on his efforts to pull Korea out from its state of being an economic basket case, which is the other side of the Park Chunghee coin.

In fact, I was inspired to look for this today because of this comment by the controversial Pawikirogi. I've read basically the same thing: Park was taking loans and grants (and Koreans' taxes) and doing nearly opposite of what American and international advisors were saying, in part because they thought the idea of impoverished, backward, and war-torn South Korea trying to become a powerhouse in anything was, well, far-fetched if not outright ridiculous.

But South Korea (and Taiwan, I would say) certainly bucked the trend. I think having been a Japanese colony had something to do with it, but it was probably less to do with "know-how" and more to do with "beat-down" to get people mobilized.kushibohttps://www.blogger.com/profile/10306033998028548550noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3869680.post-20182786327191170742010-06-06T13:12:25.681+09:002010-06-06T13:12:25.681+09:00Thanks for the list... that's a whole lot of r...Thanks for the list... that's a whole lot of reading I don't have time for right now, but I'll bookmark it and return.DSWhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/11535908226479922492noreply@blogger.com
