UCI freezes hiring and promises more hurt

Things are tough all over. California's budget and economic woes are seeping into the Ivory Tower. UCI had promised to cut $40 million in spending and that has increased to $55 million. The result is a freeze in hiring new faculty. Furloughs and pay cuts may be possible at UCI, which is Orange County's largest employer.
