Hawaii Finder 2011-15

Where am I?

  1. Apparently some readers have trouble commenting here, and kangaji (mostly of ROK Drop) has the right answer.

It's Koko Head. The giveaway is that while this is not the only railway you'll find on Oahu, it is the only one at such a steep angle. You can see the horizon off to the right (with the island of Molokai in the background), and the tracks are at 33°.

The "trail" to the top is the track itself, with the wooden railway ties acting as a staircase to the 1200-foot elevation. It's like climbing the deteriorating stairs a building of 100+ stories.

The view is worth it. Especially on weekends, lots of people do the climb as their workout. Some people literally run up and down the trail, sometimes nearly knocking down the slower "climbers."

I run three miles a day, so I did not get winded or worn out, but "M," who has only recently started power walking, had to make frequent stops.
