New Moon

The Chosun Ilbo is reporting that Korean faces are getting smaller — shorter length and shorter width, each by about 1 cm —and bodies are getting taller. At 171 cm, I was once slightly above average, but now I'm 2 cm shy of that mark: men in their twenties are now about 173.2 cm, but men in their twenties measured in 1979 were six centimeters shorter.

This all is according to a study by the Korean Agency for Technology and Standards, apparently the government arm responsible for the manufacture and distribution of Koreans.

Whether it's a change of diet leading to a different bone structure or fat deposits in different places, it's easy to see from older photographs that young Koreans are physically different from one or two generations ago. And yeah, it's not all due to plastic surgery.

  1. What's this business about small faces being attractive? I've never understood that.

Also, why do my Korean friends never answer my emails? Even if I write in Korean? My impression is that Korean workers are very busy at work and never reply from work, unlike Canadian workers, who tend to reply to emails almost instantly if you email them at work

  2. Well you rlly can't make ur face smaller with plastic surgery.

On the other hand it seems ridiculous that the S. Korean government is even funding a study like that.

  4. By the way, I believe you can make faces slightly smaller with plastic surgery...at least the width. Haven't you heard of all these Asian pop stars who have undergone the reduction of their cheekbones and jawbones?

I don't think it's so much that small face are attractive as much as so-called "moon faces" were seen as unattractive.

But a lot of the attractiveness or unattractiveness in Korea, methinks, is based on what people see as common. Common things — even aesthetically pleasing common things — often are not considered as attractive.

This is related to the topic how?

Anyway, I think it is busy-ness. I come to work and I see a pile of emails dozens deep. It's hard to keep up.

Jaw-trimming surgery is one way. I have a TV personality friend who seriously considered doing that back in the late 1990s, because she was all but told she would get a certain on-air plum position if she trimmed her face.

She declined. The particular cable venture died out and her career took off elsewhere.

Well, from a health perspective, it makes sense to know about data like height, weight, body proportions, etc., and it's easy to tack this on to other research. I doubt this cost very much.

I asked a Korean friend about this, and he said that even in the West, people that are considered attractive have small faces. He gave me the example of Jessica Alba. I looked it up and her face seemed small, but I'm not sure how much of that had to do with her being a small person in general.
